Skin Care: Tips for Newborn Baby

As a newborn parent, knowing what to do and how to care for our baby’s skin can help relieve stress and increase confidence in knowing a few tips that may help your baby avoid developing any skin issues.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when caring for baby's skin.

  • Skin to skin contact with Mom

Hearing, feeling and smelling your presence will always provide your baby security and calmness.

  • Wash your hands

Baby’s skin is extremely delicate. Before massaging or moisturizing your baby, always ensure you wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly. Make it a point that everyone who handles your baby has clean hands.

  • Bathing your baby

Gently bathing your baby will ensure complete hygiene. Be sure to use a gentle cleanser as detergents, clothing and baby products that contain fragrance, chemicals or dyes can irritate, chafe, dry out baby’s skin. Be aware of your baby’s reaction to cleansers you use in case they shown signs of an allergic reaction.

For newborns still attached to the umbilical cord, once per week sponge baths are ideal.

  • Diaper rash

Stool, urine and chemical detergents can all irritate the skin, resulting in diaper rash. Bacterial infections, yeast infections and even diaper material allergies can contribute to diaper rash. Be sure to allow the diapered area to dry completely in between diaper changes. If needed, George’s Special Dry Skin Cream is physician and dermatologist approved and can be applied lightly to soothe and moisturize the diaper area.

  • Cradle cap

It can also appear on the ears, eyebrows and face. Applying a small amount of George’s Cream to the affected area before washing your baby’s scalp and head with a mild cleanser may help to loosen the scales before bathing your infant.

If your baby’s condition does not improve after a few rashes, consult with your pediatrician about other treatment options.

  • Dry skin – Nourish your baby’s skin

A baby’s skin is incredibly sensitive, so be certain to use tear-free, fragrance-free products on your baby’s dry skin to keep it soft, supple and hydrated. Invest in a good skincare moisturizer like George’s Cream, free from parabens, urea, formaldehyde and fragrances.

If you have questions or concerns, ask your doctor and/or pediatrician to recommend resources that can help you and your baby grow together.
