If your skin is feeling itchy, tight, scaly, inflamed and cracking, excessive dryness may be to blame. Treat dry skin by first identifying the cause. So, the question is, what exactly is causing your dry skin?

Dry winter skin – The colder months can be brutal on your skin. Indoors, it’s battered by artificial heating, outdoors, the wind dries it out. To help, wear loose, natural fabrics and consider using a humidifier in your bedroom or other areas in your home where you spend a lot of time. This will add moisture in the air and help soothe thirsty skin. Be sure to use a hydrating moisturizer for dry skin every day, making sure to include all of your body (not just your face) when moisturizing.

Your Profession – Some professions require exposure to substances or involve physical tasks that can cause extreme and severely dry skin. Certain careers like hairdressing styling, nursing, working outdoors or other jobs that expose your hands and skin to potentially irritating chemicals may develop into Occupational Irritant Contact Dermatitis (OICD),a common type of eczema. Symptoms include excessive dry and cracked skin. In general, gloves and protective clothing may prevent this skin issue as well as using a gentle cleanser when washing your hands and applying a hydrating cream several times daily. Unfortunately, latex gloves can also cause skin dryness, so don’t forget to moisturize your hands several times daily.

Aging – Maturing skin needs extra help when it comes to avoiding dryness. As we get older, our skin becomes thinner and drier because of hormonal changes. Ensure that you moisturize in the morning and at night and it’s a good idea to add a hydrating moisturizer to your skincare routine.

Other skin conditions – If your dry skin is persistent and you’re concerned that you may be suffering from a skin disorder like psoriasis, rosacea or eczema (aside from OICD, eczema can come in many forms and has various causes, including allergic reactions or contact with irritants), get it checked out by your family doctor or a dermatologist and use the prescribed treatment.
