Helpful Skin Care Tips for Healthy Skin

When the cells in your body use oxygen, they create a by-product called free radicals. It’s free radicals that can cause the skin to wrinkle, sag and age. Free radicals happen to be linked to diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Antioxidants work to fight free radicals and reduce the damage they can do to your health.  Supplements are okay, however they are easily found in some of your favourite fruits and vegetables. Foods such as blueberries, salmon and leafy greens are often called “superfoods” because of their high amounts of antioxidants and great health benefits. Citrus fruits, green peppers, broccoli and dark leafy greens such as kale- These foods contain high levels of Vitamin C, which helps prevent wrinkles and dry skin.

Avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil- Each provides Vitamin E to help keep skin hydrated.

Sweet potatoes, carrots and squash- All have beta-carotene to help improve acne, wrinkles and skin dullness.

Tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon- The antioxidant Lycopene, which helps prevent sunburn, can be found in these foods.

Remember to always stay Hydrated- Drinking plenty of water is also vital to maintaining healthy skin. Drinking water throughout the day helps skin retain moisture and prevents it from drying out. If water isn’t your beverage of choice, try adding in frozen slices of your favourite fruit. They will act as ice cubes, keeping your drink cold, and as they melt the juice will naturally flavour your water.

Just as there are foods that can help, there are foods that can harm your skin. Bad eating habits can result in skin problems such as acne, bloating and oil build-up.

Foods to be mindful of are:

Sweets- Cakes, cookies, candy, soda and other foods high in sugar can cause skin to look dull and blemished. If you have a sweet tooth, try substituting in naturally sweet fruits, which incidentally may contain antioxidants.

Fried Food- Grease and fat can cause excess oil build that leads to unhealthy looking skin and blemishes. Try to limit the amount of fast food and chips you consume.

Salty Food- An excess of salt in the body can cause bloating, which can lead to tired and puffy looking skin. To avoid this, monitor the salt content of food and stay within the recommended daily percentage set by Health Canada.
